Congratulations HuwHuw Williams won the role as Sydney Swans Mascot on Sunday 3rd August when the Sydney Swans played the Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval in Canberra. All Junior Clubs were asked to nominate 1 player for the position of Sydney Swans mascot for the day. The following is the nomination submitted by the committee. The Yass Junior Roos AFC Club would like to nominate Huw Williams as our nomination for the Swans Mascot. Huw lives for Aussie Rules. He was so keen to play this year but due to a broken arm he only succeeded in playing Round One for the Yass Juniors U/10 team. However, this has not stopped Huw from loyally following his mates. He has attended each and every game as a spectator and has accompanied other boys to away games in Canberra. This has meant rising early to catch a lift to Canberra on Saturday mornings. His cheerful nature and his enthusiasm has been infectious and inspired his on field mates. He has also supported the boys in other ways. He has grabbed the goal umpire flags to assist in the game day organisation and accurately called all the goals and behinds. At the breaks he would see to it that all his mates have been given their oranges and a pat on the back. We consider that Huw is a fine example of the junior AFL sport and may well be rewarded with the sensation of becoming a Sydney Swans Mascot. From all reports Huw had a great time at the game. Well done Huw; a great ambassador for the club. Congratulations BrodyBrody Anderson reaches his 75 games milestone. Brody Anderson began his love for AFL as a youngster in Batemans Bay. He completed 2 seasons at Auskick level before moving into the team based competition. He played 40 junior games with the Batemans Bay Club before moving to the Yass Junior Roos in 2006. The Round 9 game against Woden Weston at Stirling was Brody’s 75th Junior AFL game. Congratulations Brody from the all the families involved with the Junior Roos. A presentation will be made at this weeks home game to recognise Brody’s milestone. Brothers reach Milestones in Junior AFLJeremy and Brandon Bush achieved the magnificent milestone of playing 75 junior AFL games on the weekend. Both boys were members of the inaugural Yass Junior Roos Teams in 2003, Brandon in Under 10s and Jeremy in Under 8s. Brandon continued with the Yass Junior Roos until 2005 when declining numbers in his age group forced him to join the Gunghalin Jets for 1 season and then his current club the Belconnen Cats. Brandon’s love of AFL has seen him, together with a small group of other Yass players travel to Canberra each week for training and games. On behalf of the Yass Junior Roos and your Belconnen team mates congratulations on achieving the milestone of 75 junior games.
Not to be outdone, younger brother Jeremy also reached the 75 Junior games milestone (the competition in the Bush household for the number of medallions on display is getting very close). When asked who his favourite AFL team was, Jeremy quickly replied “the Yass Senior Roos of course.” Jeremy displays pure passion for the game of AFL in Yass and is a fine ambassador for the game. He received the team Sportsmanship award in 2006 and was a nominee for Junior Roo of the Year in 2007. The Yass Junior and Senior Roos congratulate Jeremy and Brandon on their achievement in Junior AFL and look forward to watching them playing AFL for years to come. A Touch of History at first 2008 matchThomas Wentworth "Tom" Wills (19 August 1835 – 3 May 1880) was an Australian all-round sportsman who is credited along with his cousin Henry Colden Harrison as one of the inventors of Australian rules football. He was born near Gundagai and spent his first four years with his father who had a sheep station between Gundagai and Yass. The first Australian rules Football match was umpired by Tom Wills on the site of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This is the 150th Anniversary year of that first game.
It is fitting that the first junior AFL game for 2008 was against his old side and he and his team mates showed the Canberra boys that Yass knows how to play footy. Yass Junior Roos Jumper PresentationLast Wednesday the Yass Junior Roos gathered after their normal training session to be presented with their jumpers for the 2008 season. This was an eagerly anticipated event as most of the boys were keen to find out their jumper number. A few had requested special numbers to correspond with birthdays, favourite players or past games. It was great to see Representatives of the Senior Roos handing out the jumpers to the young roos. Thank you to senior players Lee French and Daniel Poidevin and Seniors Coach Terry Lemon for taking the time before their own training to present the jumpers and mingle with the juniors. Thank you also to Senior Roo Jason Anderson who cooked up a great sausage sizzle for the boys. Tipping Comp is underway24 starters have pitted their tipping prowess (or just dumb luck) against each other in the annual full season tipping competition. The results will be available each week to keep you all on the edge of your seat as the tension builds. The link at the top of the page will take you to the weekly update. Already 2 entrants have pulled off perfect scores in round 2. It must be getting too easy! Registration 2008Registration for 2008 will be held at O'Connor Park Yass from 5-30pm. A sausage sizzle will be in swing and you will have the chance to hang out with the Yass Roos senior side at their regular Thursday training session. Depending on numbers the club is looking to field sides in Under 8s, 9s, 10s, and 11s.
