Yass Junior Roos |
Round 13 (v Eastlake @ Yass) 16-08-2008The junior roos started the weekend with an official photo shoot courtesy of Judy Broers at Image Photography. The boys were drawn to the camera like a magnet and some very natural models were unveiled. Young Jack Morton gave us all a lesson on posing for the celebrity pages. Look out for him in the next edition of the men in afl calendar. Brenton Showell celebrated his 50th junior AFL game and proudly led the team onto the field as captain this week .The game against Eastlake was played in freezing conditions with most of the younger spectators retreating to the cars. For the dedicated parents on the sideline it was a pleasure to watch the improved skills of the all the boys.
In a tightly contested game the centres cleared the ball well, while the forwards ran into space, marked strongly and made several scoring shots. The defensive effort was a bit hot and cold with players struggling to man up but all the boys kept on trying. The Junior Roos marked another important event with this week’s game. The team was joined by Callum Bakken , a member of the Norwood Football Club under 10’s . Callum had traveled from Melbourne to play in the same team as his cousin Nick Cooke. Both boys are the great great nephews of Tom Wills, who is credited with umpiring the first AFL game 150 years ago. The Yass Junior Roos presented both boys with a certificate to commemorate their game together.
With regular coach Matt in Canberra with the Senior Roos, Colleen stepped in to help direct the boys on the field. Her coach’s award went to Luke Templeman for improved involvement in the game. Colleen also presented Brenton Showell with a medallion to commemorate his 50th junior AFL game. Parent’s encouragement awards went to James Phillips, Bailey Haskins, Brody Anderson, Jack Morton, Luke Templeman and Brenton Showell. Round 11 (v Magpies @ Holt) 02-08-2008The Junior Roos traveled to Holt on Saturday to take on the West Belconnen Magpies. In beautiful sunshine the boys dominated the game from the start with ace full forward Brodie Anderson kicking 5 unanswered goals in the first quarter. Goals were also kicked during the game by Oliver Whitehead , George Elliot and Bailey Haskins. The defensive work was strong giving the Magpies little possession until well in to the game. Well done to the backline of Jordan Hudson, Brenton Showell and Luke Templeman. Strong marks were taken by Lachie Jamieson, Nick Cooke and Ben Jamieson. The centre combinations of Josh Kemp, Jeremy Bush and James Phillips worked well to clear the ball and grab possession. The highlight of this week’s game was the sportsmanship showed by the team with numerous junior roos volunteering to play a quarter for the opposition to even up the numbers. Well done Brenton, Nick C, George, Brody, Oliver, Ben, Jordan and Lachie Mc. The whole team received McDonalds encouragement awards this week as the parents found it all too hard to pick between this fine group of players. The Subway coach’s award went to Brody Anderson. Round 10 (v Ainslie @ Majura) 26-07-2008The Junior Roos traveled to Majura oval in Ainslie for a chilly start to the weekend. The fog lifted and the many roos supporters enjoyed watching the game with the sun warming their backs. After 3 weeks away from the game due to school holidays coach Matt was unsure how the boys would go. The team was also a few short this week but in the spirit of junior AFL several Ainslie players played for the roos over the course of the game. The young roos showed great aggression on the field with plenty of tackling and hustling for the ball. Their attack was strong with several players producing scoring shots in the game. The skill level displayed by the boys was excellent and the sportsmanship was even better. The team shared the ball around and was always on hand to congratulate the player who achieved a goal, behind or strong mark. If you want to see the true meaning of team work then come and see the Yass Junior Roos play. Coaches award this week went to Bailey Haskins and encouragement awards to Brenton Showell, Josh Kemp, James Phillips, Lachie Mc Millan, Jordan Hudson and Oliver Whitehead. Round 6 (v Magpies @ Yass) 14-06-2008In glorious sunshine on Saturday, the Yass Junior Roos took on opponents the West Belconnen Magpies. In a very physical game the Yass Roos stood their ground and played with great spirit. The older team members led by example and performed well given the intensity of the game. With regular coach Matt Jamieson away the young Roos were left in the very capable hands of Senior Roos Leigh French and Ryan Cox. They gave the boys plenty of encouragement and direction on and off the field and seemed to be enjoying themselves more than the Junior Roos. Frenchy and Coxy both deserved a Coaches “Subway” award for their efforts but unfortunately for them they had to choose a young Roo for the award. This week it went to Nick Cooke for his consistent efforts in the game.
Parents Encouragement Awards went to James Phillips, Brenton Showell, Ben Jamieson, Jack Morton, Oliver Whitehead, and Brody Anderson. Thank you once again to umpire Ando from the Seniors and to all the other Senior Roos who came and watched our game. A huge thank you to all the parents of the Junior Roos who helped out on the day. The day showed what a strong family orientated club we have and it was great to see all the parents working towards the common goal of keeping Junior AFL alive in Yass. Round 5 (v Ainslie Red @ Yass) 31-05-2008
The goal scoring occurred in a strange pattern with only 1 player scoring a double in each quarter. Congratulations to Jack (2 goals in 1st quarter), George (2 goals in 2nd quarter), Ben (2 goals in 3rd quarter), and James (2 goals in 4th quarter). This weeks coaches 'Subway' award went to Jack Morton. The parents encouragement awards went to Bailey, Ben, Luke, Nick C, Oliver and Lachie Mc. Thanks once again to our super goal umpiring duo Daniel and Huw, to Senior Roo Jason for umpiring and Mr. Lemonhead for your continued support. Round 3 (v Ainslie White @ Majura)The Yass Junior Roos traveled to Majura Oval in Canberra to take on the Ainslie White team. The icy conditions made it difficult for both teams to control the ball. The young Roos were struggling in the cold but they didn’t give up. Nick C, Nick B, Jeremy and Ben displayed fantastic marks while Lachie Mc, George and Oliver showed some great runs. The 3rd quarter saw Brody Anderson excel in the forwards scoring our first goal. He was ably assisted by Brenton, Harry and Jordan. The backs also showed improvement with Josh, Lachie. J and Luke tackling with confidence and putting pressure on the opposition. The centres shone in the last quarter. James and Jeremy directed play well and allowed the forward combination of Brodie and George to each score a goal. The young Roos left their best quarter till last but it was all too late for the final result. Coach’s Award went to George who may have been the smallest on the ground but never gave up on the opposition. His constant involvement in the game was commented on by all those who watched the game. Parent’s encouragement awards went to Jeremy, Brenton, Luke, Brody, Ben, and Nick B. Thank you to Daniel for controlling the flags at the goalposts and to all the supporters who braved the miserable weather to watch. The Junior Roos next match is against Marist Royal at O’Connor Park 9.15am this Saturday. Round 1 (v Belconnen Magpies @ Holt)Last Saturday the Yass Junior Roos opened their season with a fantastic display of skills and sportsmanship. The boys have been training hard for the last few weeks under the guidance of Matt Jamieson and were keen to travel to Holt in ACT to take on the Belconnen Magpies. The boys were led onto the field by Nick Cooke who was celebrating his own personal milestone of 50 Junior AFL games. Well done Nick. The boys played with great confidence, sharing the ball around the whole team. It was great to watch the experienced players guide those new to the game. The enthusiasm and courage showed by some of the younger team members was exceptional. Brodie, Nick C, Josh, Harry, Oliver and Lachie Mc played well in the forwards, taking great marks and scoring goals. The hard runners in the centres directing play and contesting the ruck were Jordan, Jeremy, Nick B, James, Jack and Ben. The backs Huw, Luke, Lachie J and Bailey cleared the ball and tackled well. This weeks coach’s award went to Oliver Whitehead for an outstanding overall performance. The parent’s awards went to Brodie, Lachie J, James, Harry, Jordan and Lachie Mc. Thank you to Colleen who waved the flags at almost all the right times and to all the parents, friends and relatives who travelled and provided support on the sideline. The Junior Roos play this Saturday at home as a curtain raiser to the Senior Roos. So come along at 11am to support the future of AFL in Yass. Check out the team photo. |
