Round 10 v Eastlake/Calwell Red 25-07-2009 (O'Connor Park)

The Yass Roos Under 12s played Eastlake /Calwell Red at O’Connor Park. The team was missing a few players due to the school holidays but with the help of some super Under 9s players were able to field a competitive team.

It was by far our best game of the season with all players showing massive improvements in confidence and enthusiasm. Thank you to Jayden, Kobi-Dean and Bailey who filled in this week and never looked out of their depth in the older team, although there was a quick positional change when Jayden was paired with the tallest under 12 player ever.

Josh had yet another strong game in the backs, deflecting and marking the opposition’s goal attempts. Lachie J and Jeremy performed brilliantly in the ruck, winning the majority of the contests. Benny displayed his usual athletic and acrobatic skills, marking and tackling all over the field. At times the crowd were sure their were 3 or 4 of him out there with the amount of ground he covered.  Andrew and Zac played brilliantly mid field with plenty of possession. New recruit Daniel covered the wing position with style . He was ably assisted by Dylan. Dylan’s theory of the ball being his wallet and the opposition stealing it inspired him to constantly be involved.

Brenton, Huw, Alex and Matt had their best game. They all pushed for possession and chased down the opposition. Their improved efforts in attack, with kicking and positional play was excellent.

It was a pleasure to watch these young players having fun as they developed their AFL skills. Coach Matt was very happy with the whole team effort.

Round 8 v Queanbeyan 27-06-2009 (O'Connor Park)

The Yass under 12s Roos hosted the Queanbeyan Tigers at O’conner Park on Saturday. The team looked smashing in their brand new jerseys. Thank you to our sponsors Foran Building Company and Regional Valuers yass. The day held special significance for 2 junior roos players, Josh Kemp and Lachie McMillan. These 2 boys were awarded their 50 games medallion by coach Matt jamieson and had the added highlight of leading the team onto the oval through the huge blue and white banner. Josh and Lachie - 50 games

The small group of Yass supporters enjoyed the sun while they watched the enthusiastic Roos run around the paddock. The team is gathering cohesion each week but still lack desperation when trying to gain possession. Guys this is the one time of the week when you don’t have to be polite, just get in there and fight for the ball. Strong games were had by Jeremy 'Birthday Boy' Bush,  Jacob Davison, Josh Kemp, Ben Jamieson and Toby Serafin. Toby flew high in the ruck on numerous occcassions and perfected the tackling technique while Jacob put on a superb display of kicking and tackling for his personal fan club lead by a very proud dad. The forward pack didn’t recieve a lot of possession but Alex Buckmaster, Huw Williams, Brenton Showell, and Lachie McMillan all worked together to get the ball through the sticks. Lachie Jamieson, Matt Reinke, Zac Miller and Brody Anderson had plenty of possession in the centres.

The final score was a few to us and a few more to the oppostion. If the team could reproduce their 2nd quarter efforts from this game in every quarter of the next game then the Roos will definitely trouble the score board more next week.

Round 7 v Belconnen Cats 20-06-2009 (Aranda)

The yass Roos 12’s took on the Belconnen Cats last Saturday. The team may not win on the scoreboard each week but they sure win on enthusiasm and having fun being active. The team was under the control of super stand in coach Phil Reinke whose main aim on the day was to have every kid smiling at the end and as you can see from his report this was achieved.

A great game was had by all, as every player got to touch the ball at least twice, or maybe even three times and believe me they were stoked. Smiles galore when they had finished. They even sang the team song with gusto. Some great inroads were made with most players playing out of their comfort zone but keenly taking up the challenge and excelling. There was one passage of play in the second quarter where we scored a goal, but the exceptional part was that this play was made over more than half the field.

Josh Kemp and Jeremy Bush both had great games and kicked a goal each which delighted the team and supporters. Lachlan Jamieson was finding it a bit tough with some of the referee’s decisions but plodded on to have another good game. Jacob Davison and Ben Jamieson played well throughout the game. Andrew Stephens was chasing all day which was good to see. Zac Miller played exceptionally well and shone all day with great commitment and aggression. Zac also kicked a behind. Matthew Reinke, Brenton Showell, Huw Williams, Alex Buckmaster, , Lachie McMillan and Dylan Phillips all played hard and had some great contests with the opposition.

Thanks to Daniel Kemp and Dylan Percival for stepping up for the day and playing an enthusiastic game. Well done. Special thanks to the supporters for their encouragement of the team on the day as well as helping out with ground duties. Thankyou to Belconnen for the extra three players to make up 18 a side and a real contest. Thanks Phil from all the parents for such a relaxed fun attitude to the game.

Round 5 v Gungahlin Jets 30-05-2009 (Amaroo)

The Yass Roos Under 12’s team traveled to Amaroo to take on the Gunghalin Jets. The team took to the field with three Jets players playing with us to boost our numbers. In icy conditions the boys battled on bravely against a very well drilled team.

Improvements in all areas were evident on the day but not quite enough to have the scoreboard go our way. The forwards didn’t see much of the ball but when they did possess it they made it count. Lachie McMillan and Alex Buckmaster contested the ball in the forwards while Brenton Showell started the score board rolling for the Roos. Brodie had a strong kicking game, adding more points for the team.  Jacob Davison and Andrew Stevens were consistent throughout the game with plenty of possession being gained through their determination to get the ball. Jeremy Bush was Mr. Reliable in the centres while Matt Reinke played with no fear. Dylan Phillips and Zac Miller showed a huge improvement in hustling for the ball. Josh Kemp and Huw Williams were kept busy in the backs with Gunghalin missing numerous attempts at the posts.   Ben Jamieson had a great game in the centers with constant chasing of the ball and was rewarded with the coaches ‘Subway’ voucher.

The team has a break for the long weekend before playing Eastlake at home on the 13th June at 9.15am.

Round 4 v Tuggeranong Bulldogs 23-05-2009 (Joe O'Connor Park)

The 12’s had yet another week with struggling numbers as they played Tuggeranong Bulldogs at home. This wasn’t helped by a hand injury to Josh which sidelined him after the first quarter. If you are aged between 10 and 13 and want to try a new sport then come along to training on Wed 4.30 pm at Victoria Park.

The boys who did play are improving each week but are taking too long to settle into the serious competition style of the other teams. No more fun and games with friendly play; these teams are out to win the premiership. The young Roos showed great sportsmanship but the energy levels were very low.  The boys need to improve the hustling around the ball as there is no chance of points if you don’t have the ball.

This lack of possession hurt the team on the scoreboard. The Tuggeranong Bulldogs was a very strong team who have been playing together for 3 years and punished the inexperienced Roos with every loose ball.

The Under 12’s team manger, Colleen chose Lachie Jamieson as best on the ground for the Roos for his determination in the ruck area. The team travels to Amaroo this weekend.

Round 2 v Marist 09-05-2009 (Joe O'Connor Park)

The Yass Roos welcomed back regular coach Matt Jamieson, for the game against  Marist at O’Connor Park. After a public plea on Yass FM by Jeremy and Josh the Roos were joined by a few new players this week. Welcome back Brody and welcome to Dylan and Zac. Marist were always going to be a hard team to beat. With only 14 players available for the Roos, the even up rule was put into place and Marist rotated 4 of their players each quarter to help us out.

The Marist team was way too strong on the field and ran away with the game.  The Roos failed to maintain pressure on their players and needed to take the field with more aggression. Team: Josh Kemp, Andrew Stephen, Jeremy Bush, Matt Reinke, Lachie McMillan, Jacob Davison, Brenton Showell, Chris Ash, Lachie Jamieson, Ben Jamieson, Zac Miller, Dylan Phillips, Alex Buckmaster and Brody Anderson . The ‘Subway ‘coach’s award was given to Andrew Stephen.

This week was the debut appearance of volunteer Yass Junior Roos Umpire Richard Ash. A difficult task for many but one that Richard excelled at. Thank you for a job well done. The Roos would also like to wish Nathan from Marist a speedy recovery from his injury.

Round 1 v Ainslie 02-05-2009 (Reid)

The under 12s team were down on numbers for their first game of the season and officially forfeited the match against Ainslie. Both the Yass boys and the Ainslie team were keen for a game so we still travelled to Reid to have a friendly game. The sportsmanship displayed by both teams was fantastic. All of the Yass players displayed great enthusiasm for the game and displayed good AFL skills.

Encouragement awards were awarded to all players who traveled for the friendly match, Josh Kemp, Andrew Stephen, Jeremy Bush, Matt Reinke, Lachie McMillan, Jacob Davison, Brenton Showell, Chris Ash and Alex Buckmaster. The ‘Subway' coach’s award was tied with both Jeremy Bush for great leadership and Jacob Davison for a great first game of AFL being awarded the vouchers.
