Tom Baldwin showing massive improvement in both attack and defence earned himself the Subway Coaches award.  Zeke Groom & Tristan Laundess released some great kicks in centre field. Caylan Laundess took his 1st mark of the season while Ashlyin and Brooklyn Bolton hustled the cats with great defensive play all game.

After a brilliant 1st game Tom Baldwin was selected to lead the Roos out.  Tom proved strong in Defence while Matt Doggett played strong in attack. One of our keenest players Brooklyn Bolton worked hard all game earning another Mcdonalds Encouragement award.  Tristan Laundess enjoyed working the ruck in the forwards this game. Captain Ben Lachlan led the U8s out this week and played great in Defence. While Keely Greer and Ashlyin Brooklyn kicked well and hustled the Cougars in Defence, Keeley just missing out on her 1st mark for the season Matt Doggetts speed and fantastic handballing combined with some great kicks from Brooklyn Bolton, Tristan Laundess and Tom Baldwin kept the Cougars running. Tom chased hard and proved strong in Defence. Megan Kemp took a superb mark in the 2/3 of the game and proved strong in attack. Zeke Groom and Spencer Osburne teamed up with the Cougars to make the game even more exciting.  Zeke worked hard in the ruck whilst Spencer chased his hardest and put another goal through for the Cougars.

We travelled to Aranda this week for another exciting game against Ainslie. The U8s are still up against more experienced teams but are starting to break down the barriers.  The game is now consistently paced across the entire field.

Keeley Greer and (Captain) Caylan Laundess consistently chased the ball hard all game with some great defensive play.  Tom Baldwin and Spencer Osburne played their best in the centres, chasing and moving the ball forward with some great kicks.  Spencer topping it off with another super goal.  Matt Doggett took two superb marks saving goals in the backs line and had a pearler game.
Ben Lachlan, Zeke Groom and Tristan Laundess tried hard all game, looking for opportunity and putting up some great kicks.  Tristan scoring his first  goal - even if it was for Ainslie.

Ashlyin Bolton shared her skills with Ainslie in the first 3rd this week, but saved her best for the Roos.  Teaming up with sister Brooklyn they proved strong in defence.  Brooklyn’s all round great game earned her a well deserved award this week.
The kids are gradually learning the benefits of each third on the field.  Let’s get them handballs going against the Belconnen Cougars next week Roos.

Round 2 v Gungahlin Jets 09-05-2009 (Kippax)

The Under 8s traveled to Holt to take on the Gunghalin Jets in their second match of the season. There was panic in the Roo’s camp with the game due to start, only 5 players present and the coach and assistant coach nowhere to be seen. What a difference 5 minutes make. We took the field with 12 players and both coaches on task. The young Roos played an exceptional game with improvements in all areas on the field. Tom, Caylan, Connor, Megan and Tyson all had successful kicks at the posts. New players Brooklyn and Ashylin proved strong in the backs and centres. Tristan , Ben, and Spencer made great ground in the centres and contested the ruck well. Matty and Zeke kicked strongly in the backs.

This weeks “Subway” Coaches award went to Connor Stevens who displayed great confidence in his first game for the Junior Roos and kicked a successful long range goal.

Round 1 v Belconnen Magpies 02-05-2009 (Amaroo)

The youngsters of the club proudly ran onto the field at Amaroo led by this weeks team Captain Tyson Muscat. The players looked the part in the Roos jerseys, shorts and socks although some were a little big.

They displayed their newly learnt skills of marking, handballing and kicking with lots of enthusiasm when they had possession of the ball. The opposition players from Belconnen Magpies were a lot bigger and much more experienced than the Yass Roos but they bravely battled on. Caylan Laundess took an unbelievable mark in the backs to prevent the Magpies from scoring. He was supported well by Tom Baldwin and Ben Lachlan. Spencer Osbourne was always chasing the ball in the centres along with Keeley Grear, Matt Dogget and Tristan Laundess. Megan Kemp had a great game in the forwards as did Zeke Groom and Tyson Muscat.

The aim of the Auskick Under 8’s competition is to have fun, display good sportsmanship, and improve your AFL skills. This weeks “Subway” Coaches award went to Zeke Groom who displayed all of these qualities. Zeke was rewarded with a Subway voucher and the job of looking after the team mascot until the next game. Spencer Osbourne and Ben Lachlan were awarded this weeks McDonalds encouragement awards.
