Yass Junior Roos
General Information

Rules/Philosophy

As a junior club we subscribe to the rules of the AFL Canberra JL, where modified rules at lower age levels are used. These feature limited or no contact and an emphasis on safe participation and enjoyment rather than outright competition (No ladders / no finals). Under Eights and Nines play in 'Club Start' gala days, with no contact so emphasis is on participation and developing skills. The Under Tens and Elevens play 'Aussie Footy' at higher skill levels with additional limited contact (Bumping and modified tackling). This concept gradually introduces the requisite skills for 'Youth Football' which is played from the Under 12 age group which has the same rules and levels of contact as senior footy, and is competition based.

Training

Skills are very important in Aussie Rules so all our team members are encouraged to attend regular training during the season and to practice at home.

Training Times (2010):
Under 8s  1 hour prior to game at game venue
Under 10s Monday 6 - 7 pm Victoria Park
Under 14s Monday and Wednesday 6 – 7.30pm Victoria Park
If you are interested in joining the Yass Junior Roos please call Sharon on 0422 064032 or come along on Mon nights to Victoria Park.

Ground locations are detailed on the fixtures page.

Club History

The club formed as a subsidiary of the Gungahlin Junior Jets in 2003. We were known as the Yass Jets and fielded two teams in our own right (the under 8s and under 10s).

From this a steering committee was formed and the decision was made to go it alone in 2004. We really appreciate the assistance, both financial and in knowledge, that the Gungahlin Club has given us and this was recognised by the presentation of the Friendship Plate at the Gungahlin Presentation Day. This unique trophy was made and donated by Peter Crisp a world renowned glass artist.

Club Awards

In 2004 the Club was awarded the Prime Ministers Trophy by the Junior league for its achievements in club administration, sportsmanship and promotion of AFL in Yass.

John Barratt, a member of our Under 11s team in 2005, received the Gary Matheson Memorial Trophy awarded to a junior player/clubperson(s) who has overcome personal adversity to achieve his/her maximum potential through persistence, commitment and courage.
