Preliminary Final Yass v Belconnen (28 Aug)

Belconnen 94 def Yass 67. Despite coming back in the second quarter to lead at half time the boys couldn't hold out against Belconnen. One step better than last year, and more finals experience but still disappointing for the team who really did fancy their chances for a spot in the Grand Final.

It has still been a great year and the team can take a well-earned rest. Enjoy the short off-season boys and get freshened up to go at it again as we hit the training track early January. Get your bookings in for the Presentation Night on 11 September and let's celebrate another fine year of Aussie Footy in Yass.

Minor Semi Final Yass v Cootamundra (22 Aug)

The Yass Roos took the first step on the road to the Grand Final when they defeated Cootamundra in the Minor Semi Final last Sunday at Phillip Oval. It was an impressive display. The Roos had the game well under control by half time and even a second half revival by Coota was not enough to overcome the margin.
A very strong first quarter saw most of the play at the Yass end of the ground. The Roos back line quickly reversed the few attacking moves by Coota and the dominant centre line sent the ball forward regularly. Rod Brumby opened the scoring with a goal and Leigh French snapped a goal after crumbing the pack. Quarter time had Yass in front 2-4-16 with Coota yet to score despite the wind advantage.
The second quarter was more of the same and the game was threatening to be a rout. Rod Brumby, Shaun White, Ben Serafin and Daniel Poidevin all kicked goals and Coota did manage to trouble the scorer briefly. The long break saw Yass leading 6-8-44 to Cootamundra 1-1-7 and it looked like it was time to put down the glasses.
To Coota’s credit they came out to play in the second half and in fact out scored Yass in the third quarter. For Yass in the third quarter, Joel Marshall and Hamish Scroope scored goals; Yass led 8-15-63 to Coota 4-4-28 at three quarter time.
Rod Brumby added another 2 goals to his tally and Shaun White scored a second as Yass finished strongly to record a fine win 11-16-82 to 6-10-46.
Yass were very strong in the centre and the possessions won gave the forwards plenty of opportunity to score. Stand out players were Ben and Hamish Scroope who both had top games and must be suffering leather poisoning from the amount of possessions they had. Robbie (Zeus) Connell had another big game in the centre with his powerhouse tackling and great long kicking to the forwards. Joel (Holler) Marshall did an excellent job in Ruck and took some good marks. Aaron (Raz) Goode put in an outstanding game on the half back line stopping several forward moves by Cootamundra along with Jaime (Hammer) Fernandez.
In the other Semi Final Goulburn defeated Belconnen to gain the week off and the first Grand Final spot. Yass will now meet Belconnen next Saturday at Phillip Oval in the Preliminary Final to determine who will fill the other Grand Final berth. The game commences at 12 noon. Be there to cheer on the side as they strive to get to the Grand Final for the first time.
The Roos would like to thank all their sponsors and supporters for their assistance throughout the year.

Round 15 Yass v ADFA (14 Aug Yass)

The Roos finished the home and away back on the winners list. Players Player was Ben Scroope. Rod Brumby booted 6 goals to give the goal kicking award a shake. The Fox Terrier couldn't get to the game so unless someone fills me in with more info this will be it for the match report.

Next Sunday we play in the knockout Semi Final hoping to stay in the hunt for a Grand Final berth.

Round 14 Yass v RMC (7 Aug RMC)

RMC too good on the day. RMC 6-12-48 to Yass 4-7-31

This has dropped the Roos to 4th spot on the ladder and means elimination finals all the way to the grand final. Even a win next week can only bring the team up to third place. Also more injuries are a bit of a worry leading into the finals. The boys will need to dig deep over the coming weeks.

Round 13 Yass v Cootamundra (1 Aug Yass)

Big win to Yass. Players Player Rob Connell, runners up Ben Scroope, Aaron Goode

Full Report to come. I have been promised something trust me!

Round 12 Yass v Goulburn Swans (25 July Goulburn)

In cold, windy conditions at Goulburn the Yass Roos chalked up their third win in a row. This is setting the stage for an excellent run into the finals with three more games to play in the home and away matches and will help towards the goal of a top two position which is still a possibility.
Yass won the toss and took the chance to use the strong to try and establish a lead in the first quarter. Despite the wind it was Goulburn who first slotted a goal home but this was followed shortly after by an answer from Rod Brumby (Sponsor: The Sport Shed). The ball stayed down the Roos end of the ground but several attempts only gained behinds until late in the quarter when Leigh French booted another major. A tough, scrappy quarter saw the score at Yass 2-4-16 to Goulburn 1-1-7.
Goulburn had the wind advantage in the second quarter but a mammoth effort by the Yass back line restricted them to only 2 points. Strong work by Brendan Foran (Sponsor: Yass Jewellers) , Jaime Fernandez, Leigh French, Ben and Hamish Scroope (Sponsor: Gerard Kerin), Daniel Poidevin (Sponsor: Yass Real Estate) and Adrian Paull (Sponsor: Southern Cable Services) gave the forwards opportunities that resulted in goals to Robbie Connell (Sponsor: Southern Cable Services) and Jesse Meredith. The half time score was Yass 4-4-28 to Goulburn 1-3-9.
Yass needed to win the third quarter while they had the scoring end and this they did in fine style. Goals to Dave Field (Sponsor: Booth Potholing), Jesse Meredith and Joel Marshall (Sponsor: Booth Potholing) and more excellent defence saw the Roos leading 7-7-43 to the Swans 2-5-17 at three quarter time.
It was do or die for the Swans in the last and they came out determined to use the wind to the full. The Yass back line dug deep to hold out the Swans who really gave it a shake kicking four goals to the Roos 3 points. In the end it wasn’t enough and the Yass Roos registered a fine win 7-10-52 to 6-5-41.
The Yass Roos defensive half can take full credit for this win. The drive out of Half Back gave the opportunity for the forwards to do their thing and the Goulburn attack was constantly frustrated by the stalwart efforts. The Players Player award went deservedly to Brendan Foran (Sponsor: Yass Jewellers) who had what this scribe thought to be one of his best games. Many contested possessions and good delivery out of the danger zone inspired the team. As well as those mentioned above in the back line, Troy Scanes and Josh Viney also did a great job on the day.
This was a significant match as it was the first time Yass has beaten Goulburn and with a likely rematch in the finals it was important to establish some winning credentials against them. Yass face a similar task next week with another big match against Cootamundra at Victoria Park on Sunday. A narrow loss to Coota last time has the team are fired up for revenge and ready to roll on to the finals. So get along and support the locals next weekend. The Yass Golf Club and ActewAGL proudly sponsor the Yass Roos.

Round 11 Yass v Belconnen Magpies (10 Jul Yass)

Yass 10-10-70 def Belconnen 7-5-47

After a slow start the Roos managed to go to the first break with scores locked at 2-1-13 each. It was the Roos who fired in the second quarter to stamp their authority on the game and establish a winning margin.

Players Player Leigh French, runners up Rob Connell and Hamish Scroope

Round 10 Yass v ADFA (3 Jul Yass)

Yass 15-18-108 def ADFA 5-6-36

A solid performance by the Roos. Kicking for goal could still improve with several easy opportunities missed but this win will help the finals chances.

Round 9 Yass v RMC (26 Jun)

RMC forfeit match.

Round 8 Yass v Coota (19 Jun Yass)

The one that got away. In very wet, windy and cold conditions at Victoria Park, Yass and Cootamundra fought out a low scoring game that saw Coota sneak away with the win, 37 points to 34. The Roos were not without their chances to win: in fact a kick with seconds remaining was touched through for a behind when a goal would have won the match.
It was an exciting struggle for the entire game with never much more than a goal separating the teams. Coota led from the start but could not establish a comfortable lead in the conditions. The strong wind blowing across the ground caused difficulties for both sides to reach goal.
One goal was all Yass required to take the lead from half time but the Coota backline worked well to foil many attacks by the Roos. Coota would then work it down for a goal that Yass would answer but the Roos could not get the double that would put their noses in front. Once again a couple more goals instead of behinds could have made the difference but that's football.
The game was played with good sportmanship. Both teams appreciated each others effort and the skills required in the conditions and it was obvious that both teams had given plenty of sweat in playing the game. Coota will keep top spot on the ladder with this win but they are definitely not invincible and should not be too cocky about their good fortune thus far.
Player's Player was Hamish Scroope (Sponsor: Gerard Kerin) who worked hard all day and just seemed to be everywhere. Ben Serafin (Sponsor: DJ & BJ Bush Painting and Decorating) also had another good game on the ball.

Round 7 Yass v Goulburn City Swans (5 Jun Yass) [Photos]

The first home game of the season but the result did not go the way of the Roos. Rushed finishing and pressure from Goulburn backs saw inaccuracy dog the Roos again and despite more scoring shots the final result was Goulburn 9-4-58 to Yass 5-10-40. The low scoring was indicative of the tough struggle. Players Player went to Rod Brumby (Sponsor The Sport Shed).
A couple of injuries and a scuffle in the last quarter that stemmed from frustration could see the side further depleted as three players from Yass and one from Goulburn will face the tribunal on Tuesday.

Round 6 Yass v Belconnen (29 May Kippax)

Yass 12-23-95 def Belconnen 3-8-26

Players Player: A tie between Hamish Scroope (Sponsor: Gerard Kerin) and Rob Connell (Sponsor: Southern Cabling Services)

Yass dominated possession and only poor finishing stopped this from being a very large win to the Roos. The forward line is performing very well at the moment and with a bit more steadying when shooting for goal could well rack up some serious scores. This was a top effort by the team and discipline was key to making sure that the ball was the focus.
The last of a string of away games this win should set the team up well as they now enjoy 5 home games in row. Do yourself a favour and come on down to Victoria Park over the next few weeks for some fantastic Aussie footy action.

Round 5 Yass v ADFA (22 May ADFA)

The Roos sang their team song loud and proud on Saturday afternoon for the first time this season. It was another extremely close game for the young roos but, this time they showed great skill and discipline to hold onto victory. With as many as 6 key senior players out of the side, the Roos overcame inexperience with sheer determination and excellent teamwork to win the game by 14 points.
The start of the game saw some young players line up in key positions around the ground with a huge task in front of them. The first quarter saw the ball going from one end to the other with both sides having several shots at goal. ADFA went to the first break one goal up, kicking 3 goals 2 behinds to the Roos 2 goals 2 behinds.
The Roos came out firing in the second quarter with Leigh French dominating the backline and Josh Viney controlling the ball all through the centre and mid field. Accurate goal kicking paid off for the Roos as they took the lead by kicking 6 goals 1 behind to ADFA's 4 goals 2 behinds. Daniel Poidevin (Sponsor: Yass Real Estate) leading from the goal square provided himself as the main target for the Yass side and Jesse Meredith in his first game for the season roved the packs beautifully to sneak 2 goals in about 10 minutes. The Roos went to the half time break with their nose in front by 5 points and feeling very confident that they could take control of the game and storm home for victory.
The Roos continued to play with the same intensity in the third quarter with Ben Serafin (Sponsor: DJ & BJ Bush Painting and Decorating), Hamish Scroope (Sponsor: Gerard Kerin), Rob Connell (Sponsor: Southern Cabling Services) and Daniel Smith all winning the ball from most contests and delivering it into the forward line. Some undisciplined play by several Yass players allowed ADFA to kick 2 quick goals, which lifted their spirits and let them back into the game. At 3 quarter time, Yass had a 3 goal lead but ADFA weren't going to give up that easy on their home soil. The Roos were looking at familiar territory again. They had to decide on going hard at the football, hard at the man and whether they really wanted to win the game of footy or not. To the credit of the young Roos they kept their heads level and stuck to the team plan to hold onto victory with only 2 reserves on the bench all day and young players in key positions.
One of the youngest players on the field, Josh "Fox" Viney was the stand out performer on the ground and picked up the highly sought after Players Player award. Daniel Poidevin had his best game in 2 seasons at Full Foward, kicking 5 goals and helping set up several others. Dave "Buttons" Field (Sponsor: Booth Potholing) and Jesse Meredith both chipped in with 3 goals each. The other dominant players were Leigh French at Centre Half Back, Rob Connell, Ben Serafin, Dave Willersdorf (Sponsor: Southern Cabling Services) Hamish Scroope and Brett Curtis (who left half his skin on the field).
Team work, talk and accurate disposals were the major factors in the Yass Roos Victory with the final scores being, Yass 15 - 6 - 96 to ADFA 12 - 10 - 82.
This Saturday the Roos take on Belconnen for the second time this season and the stage is set for a huge game of football. To see all the action, be at Kippax Oval at 12:00pm and cheer on your local boys, the Yass Roos who are proudly sponsored by the Yass Golf Club and ActewAGL.

Round 2 Yass v Goulburn (2 May Goulburn)

The Yass Roos must have thought they hopped the wrong way on Sunday and ended up in Antarctica but no, it was just Goulburn. The conditions for football were the worst I’ve ever seen with over 100km/h winds howling straight down the ground and a wind chill factor of about minus 20 degrees.
The Roos ever-reliable stand in Captain Ace Ventura was unlucky not to win the toss but lucky to find the coin after throwing it in the air, so the Goulburn Swans obviously decided to kick with the wind and were confident of getting a ten goal head start. The young Roos were confident of dominating the first quarter as shown in round one against Belconnen and were not going to let the Swans have the start that they wanted.
The first quarter was a very scrappy affair with the ball spending the majority of the quarter on the ground, or swaying around in the air. The Roos backmen held strong and did not allow the Swans forwards to take a clean mark. The Swans soon opened the scoring with a couple of points from rushed kicks from deep in the forward line. They soon realized that their only chance of scoring goals was to try and kick the ball up in the air from the center of the field and let the wind do the rest. This tactic soon paid off for the Swans as it took the Roos three hard kicks to get the ball to the center of the ground and took the Swans one kick to get the ball back to the goals again. At quarter time the Roos were extremely happy with their efforts at keeping the Swans to 3 goals 5 points without scoring themselves. They were then ready to utilize the breeze and pile some points on their side of the scoreboard. The Yass boys outplayed the Swans for the whole quarter and kicked 4 goals 6 points to the Swans 2 points and went to the half time break 5 points in front.
With the wind speed increasing and the temperature dropping both sides were itching to get back into it. The Roos knew they had to keep the ball out wide and try to limit the Swans opportunities at snapping for goal, if they were going to keep the score down for the quarter. The mighty Roos backmen and midfielders showed great desperation and held the Swans to 3 goals 2 points for the quarter. All that the young Roos needed was 4 straight kicks in the last quarter to take the Gerard Kerin Burn-Ass Cup back to Yass for the first time. The Swans showed their age and experience and placed all 18 players in the Roos forward line to trap the ball in and slow the game down as much as possible. The Roos inability to practice goal kicking at training proved costly as they kicked 1 goal 6 points for the final term and fell 10 points short of victory. Both teams praised the efforts of the umpires and each other in conditions that would have blown a husky off its chain. The Roos are looking forward to playing Goulburn in the second round of the competition and are determined to drink out of Storky’s new Cup. Player's Player was Ben Serafin (DJ & BJ Bush Painting and Decorating) for the second week in a row.
The Roo boys thank their dedicated supporters and are looking forward to seeing them all on their first bus trip to Cootamundra next Saturday. Thanks also to our sponsors, Yass Golf Club and ActewAGL. Hop on.

Round 1 Yass v Belconnen (17 Apr Kippax) [Photos]

In a game that could have gone either way the Yass Roos let poor discipline and temper cost them the win against Belconnen last Saturday.
On a great day for footy the Roos looked fantastic in the new jumpers and the sponsors logos for Yass Golf Club and ActewAGL were prominent. All the supporters were pumped for the opening round and as usual the traveling Yass cheer squad equaled or out numbered the locals.
The first quarter could not have gone better for Yass as they came out firing on all cylinders and completely blitzed a flat and shell-shocked Belconnen. Taking advantage of the breeze Yass opened with goal from Rod Brumby (Sponsor The Sport Shed) crumbing the pack in the first minute. The goals kept coming courtesy of Leigh French, Joel Marshall (Sponsor Booth Potholing) and Dave Field (Sponsor Booth Potholing). A great handpass from Ben Serafin saw Dave Field score another major and the Roos had 5 goals on the board before Belconnen managed their first after a move around the boundary. Joel Marshall booted home another goal for Yass after a strong mark to see the score at Yass 6-3-39 to Belconnen 1-2-8 at quarter time. Yass were strong at the ball all quarter and looking for team mates.
Belconnen came out more determined in the second quarter and with a freshening breeze slotted home 5 unanswered goals to tear back the Yass lead. Yass only managed one behind for the quarter and the game was all tied up at half time with both teams on 6-4-40.
After half time both teams were keen to go on with it but a tough struggle developed. The first goal was not scored until halfway through the quarter when Ben Serafin opened his account with a great goal from the boundary. Belconnen scored a goal later to even things up and Yass went to three quarter time with a slender 1 point lead: Yass 7-8-50 to Belconnen 7-7-49. Frustration was showing in both teams with some tough clashes highlighting the fact that neither team could gain a decisive lead.
In one of the strangest incidents I have ever seen in footy, one of the Boundary Umpires lost it big time and after giving the spectators the middle digit salute, proceeded to kick the ball away instead of throwing it in and then headed for the dressing sheds never to return! The game was completed without his services and I would hope some disciplinary action is planned for this totally unacceptable behaviour from an official of the sport.
It all came down to the last quarter and Belconnen had the breeze in their favour. Belconnen opened with a goal to take the lead then Dave Field followed with snap to put Yass back in front. The next 2 goals went to Belconnen giving them a ten point break.
After a dubious free kick to Belconnen in front of goal tempers flared and at least 8 players were involved in a very ugly brawl. One Belconnen player was knocked senseless and had to be stretchered from the field while another was forced from the field under the blood rule bleeding from the mouth. Two Yass players, Rob Connell (Sponsor Southern Cabling Services) and Michael Fish were reported for striking and will face the tribunal on Tuesday. The ensuing goal to Belconnen in the aftermath of this incident and the fight itself broke the concentration of Yass and despite a late goal to Ben Serafin Belconnen finished winners with 11-8-74 to Yass 9-12-66. This lack of control and discipline by the Roos left a sour taste to what was otherwise a great close game of football. The loss is not the start to the season the Roos had hoped for and the outcome of the tribunal may well add to a bad result if both of these key players are suspended. Several 50m penalties during the game also impacted on the result.
On a positive note the first quarter saw the team show real class and teamwork. Many players put in excellent performances and the Player’s Player award went to Ben Serafin (Sponsor DJ & BJ Bush Painting and Decorating) who worked hard all day gathering possessions, assisting goals and scoring two himself. Equal runners-up were Josh Viney, Dave Willersdorf (Sponsor Southern Cabling Services) and Rod Brumby.
