Yass Roos
Match Reports (2006)

Round 17 (v ADFA @ Yass 5 Aug 2006)

It's time for another sporadic report and the occasion prompting this one was the third (and best!) win of the season for the Roos. This one was a game the boys had looked forward to having beaten ADFA in round 2 at the parade ground. Chances were it could be another win if the Roos could get it right on the day.

From the opening bounce the team just seemed to click. With Brendan Foran and Adrian Paull both celebrating their 50 game milestones coach Terry asked for a special effort from everyone to make their day special. The team certainly did that.

An opening quarter scoreline of Yass 5-1-31 to ADFA 2-3-15 gave the Roos plenty of confidence to keep doing the job. At half time Yass was 7-4-46 to ADFA 3-8-26 but as Terry pointed out they had the same number of scoring shots as us and only poor finishing by ADFA had given the Roos the score advantage. He asked for a concerted effort from the whole team to put the game beyond doubt in the third quarter.

That is exactly what happened with the Roos only allowing ADFA 1 point in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 11-9-75 to 3-9-27. Pressing home the advantage in the last and playing out the game with no let up, the Roos came home handsome winners 16-12-108 to 5-9-39 to record the largest score so far this season.

Players Player was Danny Battye in a sterling effort playing as a loose half-back flanker. It was hard to pick other stars as the whole team lifted on the day. Adrian had a memorable effort up at full forward (normally more accustomed to Full-back) and notched up 4 goals to eclipse Jammo's tally for the season. Sorry Jammo but it was a target. In Jammo's defence he has had a wretched season with injury and hasn't seen near enough game time.

Post celebration reports from training on Monday indicate some of the boys had a big one on Saturday night and well into Sunday morning. Maybe that explained the small turn out for the Monday recovery training. One more game to go against Belconnen. If the team takes some of this game's form into it it could be a beauty. See you there.

Round 14 (v ANU @ Amaroo 15 Jul 2006)

Yes, it was at Amaroo. On a wet and miserable day the ground at ANU was closed to play and last minute arrangements saw the game moved to Amaroo and delayed to a 1-10pm start. This gave the team a chance to enjoy Terry's stand-up act for pre-game entertainment. You need to update your material a bit Terry but I suppose the young blokes haven't heard half of them.

It was a day the Roos would rather forget because apart from playing in the most testing of conditions seen for footy in a long time a new record low score for the club was set. Only 2 points were scored for the Roos and one of those was a rushed behind!. To be fair, ANU only managed 44 points.

Brendan Foran played another out-standing game taking the Player's Player Award. Ben Donoghue and Danny Battye were runners-up and Danny also received the Opposition Coaches pick of the pack award.

Conditions were arctic with the usual Amaroo winds, constant rain and a water logged ground. A few spectators huddled around the sheds and a big thank you goes out to them for braving the conditions to support the team. The big factor again was putting together a team! The Roos have used 43 players this year and while this sounds like we have a massive list it is not the way to put together a consistent team capable of coherent play. Lots of these players are past players coerced at the last minute to come out and make up the numbers.

The Roos need at least 18 seriously committed players and maybe another dozen regulars to mount a serious challenge in Division 2. At the moment I reckon we would be lucky to have 6 players who have played more than 10 games this season. So players, It's up to you to decide your commitment level for next season. That's what will make or break the club. The committee is still working hard and keeping things going off-field. The supporters are still there and so are the sponsors. All we need is the players willing to step up each week and play and get to training regularly. If you want to play, make it happen. Don't take it on as a part-time, "I'll turn up if I feel like it" proposition. Make some commitment.

It's a bye next week, a road trip to Goulburn and 2 home games to finish the season. Let's try and finish as best we can with good numbers at training and plenty of players to choose from at selection!

Round 12 (v Harman @ Yass 1 Jul 2006)

Sponsors day saw the Roos finally score their second win of the season against a depleted Harman side. To their credit, Harman resisted the temptation to bolster the side from their Division 1 ranks even though their top team had the bye. It's a pity other 2 team clubs don't have the same sense of fair play when this situation occurs.

The Roos jumped early and led at quarter time 4-4-28 to 2-2-14. They continued to apply pressure on the scoreboard to extend their lead at half time to 8-8-56 to 3-4-22 and again outscored Harman in the third (11-10-76 to 4-5-29).

Despite a fade out at the start of the last quarter where the boys probably started to celebrate a little too early the Roos held on for a solid win. Harman did outscore the Roos in the last quarter 3-5 to 2-3) and better reward for their shots might have seen a much closer match.

With several players selected in unaccustomed roles the goal scorers list for the Roos looked a little strange with regular backline players getting amongst the goals. Adrian Paull scored 2 from Full Forward and the Fox Terrier (perennial back pocket given a last quarter run in the forward pocket) gave everyone heart failure while trying his hardest to stuff up scoring his first goal for the Roos but he eventually got it over the line. The goals were shared around fairly evenly amongst the team. Ando bagged 3, Matt Jamieson got 2 on only one leg, Brendan Foran 2, Shaun White 2 and Lloyd Scroope also scored his first ever goal.

The Players Player and Opposition coaches pick of the pack was Jason Anderson. Runners up were Daniel Smith and Brendan Foran. Jason also picked up the Pizza award. The final Score was Yass 13-13-91 to Harman 7-10-52.

Round 11 (v Cooma @ Snowy Oval 24 Jun 2006)

The third full bus made its speedy way to Cooma for the clash with the mountain men (thanks Colin). This was one the Roos were hoping to get them back in the winners circle but the Cats had other ideas and came out firing on all cylinders. It took the Roos until the second quarter to record their first goal.

It looked like the Cats were about to notch up their first win ever against the Roos. Only the start of the last quarter saw the Roos play with any cohesion to record the three first goals of the quarter but the Cats answered to go on to record a comfortable victory. Cooma 14-13-97 to Yass 5-4-34.

Players player and new-found Centre Half Back was Ryan Cox with Andrew Morgan and Jason Anderson runners-up. It was great to have Shaun White back after a couple of weeks overseas but too many key positions were missing for the young and inexperienced Roos to fill.

Roll on the Sponsors match against Harman!

Round 9 (v RMC @ Yass 3 Jun 2006)

It's been a while since we had a report so here goes. The recent matches have not gone well for the Roos and wins have been hard to come by. This game was always going to be tough against what many consider the best team in the competition (despite their 3 spot on the ladder).

Getting a team together again proved difficult and this is astounding considering this was a home game. Doesn't anyone want to play footy? Most of the selected team finally made it to the field and set about frustrating RMC's run to the goals. The scoreboard didn't quite tell the story of the game even though RMC had avery comfortable win. I'm sure they knew they had played a game of footy.

The game was played in pretty good spirit and when the chips are down as they are for the Roos at the moment the whole point should be to enjoy the game. More players need to chill out and concentrate on playing the game and not trying to ther umpire's job as well.

Players Player was Brendan Foran and it was thoroughly deserved. In a game when he probably shouldn't have even played due to injury he had an outstanding game and was an inspiration to the team. Runner up was Adrian Paull and he also got the hairdo award in recognition of consistent excellent work at full back against often overwhelming odds. Well done Adrian. Ryan Cox took the Opposition coaches award for his sterling performance at centre half back: a position he is beginning to really master. It is great to see him back on the paddock and playing with such high skill and commitment. Joel Willersdorf picked up the pizza award and both he and Brett Curtis were nominated as players who had one of their best games so far this season.

The sour note for the day, apart from the loss, was the injuries: Leigh French ankle, Jason Anderson foot, Wayde Chalmers hamstring. Thankfully there is a break for the long weekend so all will have a chance to rest up and be fit for the next game against ANU at home.

And what was the score you ask? Well it's academic really, suffice to say RMC won. If you want the details check out the Sporting Pulse web site (link on the news page).

Round 4 (v Belconnen @ Jamison 30 Apr 2006)

A poor turn out of selected players made this one difficult from the outset in what was already going to be a tough assignment for the Roos. With no bench available for the first quarter and only 20 players completing the game the Magpies piled on 7-3 for the first quarter and the Roos failed to trouble the scorer.

A solid effort by the Roos saw them claw their way back but they were well beaten by a better side on the day.

The last quarter saw the Roos match Belconnen but by then it was all over. Players Player was Andrew Morgan and Opposition Pick of the Pack was Brendan Foran. The final score was Belconnen 17-13-155 to Yass 7-2-44.

This sees Yass now in 9th place on the ladder and looking to turn the season around. More commitment to training and getting to games is required if the Roos are to record some more wins this season.

Round 3 (v Gungahlin @ Amaroo 22 Apr 2006)

The Roos may have been down but Jammo was flying high to take this mark against Gungahlin.

It was not a great day for the Roos however going down in a game we should have won. Final score was Gungahlin 11-6-72 to Yass 8-9-57. Failure to capitalise on scoring opportunities in the first quarter probably cost the Roos the match (quarter time score Yass 1-5-11 to Gungahlin 2-1-13.

Lack of training showed as the team work was not happening. Discipline also suffered a little as players got frustrated with poor performance.

Players Player was Leigh French and Ryan Cox got the Opposition Pick of the Pack.

Round 2 (v ADFA @ ADFA 8 Apr 2006)

The Roos turned it around today with a win over the ADFA lads. It wasn't a crushing victory or a high scoring game but the Roos held on to record a comfortable win Yass 9-7-61 ADFA 6-9-45. Yass now sits 7th on the ladder.

I don't know who got the gongs but Frenchy was flying high (thanks Steve for the photo).

Round 1 (v Coota @ Yass 1 Apr 2006)

The team that played last week wasn't available and this week's team went down. That's a bit unfair but you could have been forgiven for thinking the Roos were somewhere else.

Coota handed out a big loss to the Roos to bring them back to earth after last weeks trial game win over Goulburn. Player's Player was Daniel Smith and the Opposition Pick of the Pack was Dave Willersdorf. Final Score: Coota 18-14-122 Yass 5-6-36.

It can only get better from here.
