Yass Roos
Match Reports (2007)

Round 18 v Harman @ Yass 11 August 2007

The Roos had to win and Belconnen had to lose against ANU for the Roos to make the finals. We did our part taking the game against Harman 25-27-177 to 4-4-28 but Belconnen spoiled the party by sneaking a late goal to beat ANU by 5 points relegating the Roos to 5th spot.

Players Player went to Brendan Foran (runners-up Ben Serafin and Andrew Morgan), Coaches Award Lloyd Scroope, Yass Pizza Award Broughton Webb, Blyssful Hair award Leigh French. Liam Brandon racked up a lazy 11 goals to take the league goal kicking award for 2007 with 73 goals.

Round 14-16

The reporter has been slack and only got to one of these games. Murrumbidgee hung on to win the Round 15 clash by 20 points. Check the Yass Tribune for more details on matches. Lloyd is doing a great job with the match reports and his info is probably better than mine.

I promise I will try harder.

Round 13 v ANU @ Yass 7 July 2007

The chance to redeem the stupid mistakes in Round 2 that cost the Roos that game against ANU came about on a wet and cold home game at Joe O'Connor Park. This was always going to be a tough one with ANU sitting comfortably on top of the ladder and the Roos in 5th position (although coming home well).

The first quarter saw the Roos in their now familiar 'go slow' mode and ANU got away to a flyer to lead at quarter time 6-4-40 to Yass 1-3-9. It seemed this game was not going to be the win the Roos needed.

I don't know what the coach said at the break but it worked. The Roos that played the second quarter were a totally different side and completely out-played and out-scored ANU. The domination saw the Roos leading at half time 8-8-56 to ANU 7-5-47 in one of the biggest comebacks yet by the Roos.

The third quarter saw a real arm-wrestle as conditions got worse. The Roos again out-scored ANU to lead 10-9-69 to 8-8-56 going into the last quarter. The last quarter saw ANU go hard to score first and narrow the gap. The Roos got one back and then, with the ball in ANU's fifty metre area the Roos had a brain explosion and gave away a string of 50 metre penalties that handed ANU two free goals from directly in front. Things happened so quickly the scoreboard got confused and no-one was sure what the score really was as the quarter drew to a close. Ben Scroope (playing his 50th game for the Roos) was awarded a free kick and 50 metre penalty to put him in scoring range. His subsequent goal turned out to be the winning margin as the teams were locked together at that stage. The final siren blew before the ball could be brought back into play and the Roos were victorious 12-10-82 to ANU 11-10-76. What a nail-biter!

Players player was Ben McCallum, runners-up Andrew Morgan and Daniel Smith. Chris Dawe, in his first game for the Roos bagged 5 goals. This was a much needed win for the Roos and a real achievement to beat one of the form sides of the season. It goes to show that the Roos are the real deal on their day and they should have confidence to go out and play to win each week.

The win, for me, was slightly tarnished by the deplorable display of discipline in the last quarter especially. The one thing this correspondent would like to see disappear from the Roos game is the constant badgering of the umpires. It cost us a report this week and is not helping our reputation either. The team just needs to concetrate on playing and let the umpires do what they do without any input from them. It would make the wins much more satisfying. Despite all the whinging and complaining I hope the irony of the fact that the winning kick came from a 50 metre penalty TO the Roos is not lost on the team (so much for those miserable one-eyed umpires!).

Round 12 v RMC 1 July 2007

Four points to the Roos as RMC were unavailable and a suitable date to re-schedule could not be decided. The week off gave the Roos a chance to get fit and healthy again for the next big match at home against ANU.

Round 11 v Goulburn @ Goulburn 24 June 2007

The Roos headed to Goulburn needing a win to keep any chance of finals berth alive. In a gutsy effort inspired by some top performances by several players including Liam Brandon, Jacko O'Brien, Andrew Morgan, Ben Serafin, Brendan Foran, Danny Battye and Leigh French the Roos came out victorious 9-9-63 to Goulburn 7-7-49.

The Roos trailed at half time but never lost sight of the goal and toughed it out to come home with a well-earned win. It was fantastic result which also saw the BurnAss Cup come back to Yass for only the second time since it's inception.

Player's Player was Danny Battye, rewarded for several crucial deliveries from the half back line and a couple of inspiring goals that motivated the team to lift when needed.

Round 10 v Belconnen @ Yass 16 June 2007

The Roos started well but couldn't hang on to the fast finishing Magpies. Final result saw Belconnen 13-5-83 defeat the Roos 10-13-73. Better kicking by the Roos would have certainly turned the result around.

Player's Player was Ben Serafin, Yass Pizza award - Ben Scroope, Blyssful Hair Design Award - Jacko O'Brien and Spectators Award - David Willersdorf.

Round 7, 8, 9 Harman, Gungahlin, Cootamundra

The fox terrier was unable to get to these games due to other commitments but 2 wins and a loss was not a bad result. Big wins over Harman and Cootamundra and a narrow loss to Gungahlin sees the Roos in 6th spot on the ladder and pushing for the top four. A string of home games to finish the season should give the team every opportunity to make the most of winning form.

Go the Roos.

I can't remember all the Player's Player winners but Liam Brandon, Sam Brandon and Leigh French took some of the gongs. I will try and get to some more games before the end of the season. Meanwhile keep reading the Yass Tribune for the Roos stories put in by Gerard and they will keep you up to date when the web site can't (Thanks Gerard).

Round 6 v ADFA @ Yass 12 May 2007

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) ADFA has had to forfeit this game. Yass will get the points but miss out on a home game and the potential percentage. On the bright side it gives players a chance to get over any niggling injuries before the next game at Harman.

Round 5 v Eastlake @ Kingston 6 May 2007

A perfect day for footy and the Roos delivered another fine win over Eastlake. The final score was Yass 20-19-139 to Eastlake 7-5-47.

An 8 goal to 1 second quarter really set up the win. Liam Brandon and Ben McCallum worked into space in fornt of goal and took many marks. Liam managed to rack up 8 goals. Other players to have strong games were Andrew Morgan, Daniel Poidevin, Kim Boyle, Daniel Smith... really you could just about list the whole side.

Players Player was Damien Waters, recognising his great effort in the ruck for the whole game against probably Eastlake's best player. Sam Brandon (Liam's younger but taller brother) played off the bench and managed 2 goals in a very creditable debut. Troy Scanes also played his 50th game for the Roos and would have been happy to celebrate this milestone with a win.

The only cloud over the game was a hard knock to the head of Matt Jamieson in a marking contest that had the claret flowing freely and then later a knee injury that sidelined Matt for the second half. Subsequent indications are that there is no serious damage and he should be OK for the next game. Leigh French copped a head clash and a nice shiner and Brendan Foran sat out the last quarter with a sore knee but both should be fine for the next game.

The only other minor negative was a last quarter fade-out by the Roos that allowed Eastlake to score more in the last quarter than they had for the entire game. I am sure the players will take this on board for future games. All in all it was a great win on a fantastic day for footy.

This result sees Yass in 8th spot on the ladder and unlucky to not be in the top four. The ANU and Murrumbidgee games were ones that got away (especially ANU) and with those wins the ladder position would have been a lot different. It's still early in the season and I think better is still to come. Don't write the Roos off at all.

Round 4 v Murrumbidgee @ Stirling 28 Apr 2007

This game promised to be a cracker but unfortunately the weather intervened. While the rain was more than welcome it turned this game into a spectacle of errors from both sides. Scoring was next to impossible as both side slugged it out in the very heavy conditions.

Coach Terry must be a psychic because his pre-game chat pointed out that the Roos seem to always start slowly against Murrumbidgee and then lose by the first quarter margin. Guess what the winning margin was: almost the the exact first quarter margin. You couldn't, however, say the Roos started slowly. They dominated possession for the first half of the first quarter but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard. Murrrumbidgee led at quarter time 1-5-11 to 0-1-1.

The final score was Murrumbidgee 3-11-29 defeating Yass 2-8-20: a very low scoring game. No goals were scored by either team after half-time as players grew more tired in the wet.

Daniel Smith had a great game and racked up many unrewarded tackles. Other players to feature were Liam Brandon, Brendan Foran, and Adrian Paull. A couple of opportunities for the Roos in the last quarter just wouldn't go through the big sticks and disappointingly the Roos lost another close one. This was definitely a winnable game but conditions did not assist the team. Our luck must change soon with these close ones.

Round 3 v Cooma @ Snowy Oval 21 Apr 2007

The biggest winning margin and the highest score by the club saw the Roos take victory over Cooma on the annual bus trip south. I didn't get to the game so I can't tell you much but I hear the bus trip home was interesting.

Player's Player was Matt Jamieson after a superb 11 goal haul. Guy Luckie also managed 5 goals. The final score was Yass 22-13-145 to Cooma 8-2-50. The first win for 2007.

Round 2 v ANU @ South Oval 15 Apr 2007

So near and yet so far. In a cracker of a game the Roos took it right up to ANU and only a couple of silly 50m penalties in the dying stages cost them the win. The final score was ANU 14-10-94 to Yass 12-12-84.

Comments from the crowd indicated this was one of the most exciting games for a while and I am sure the ANU team realise they dodged a bullet on this one. Coach Terry echoed the sentiment of many that this one hurt to lose. It was certainly a great display by the team; never giving up and working their way from behind to lead in the last quarter.

Players player was Liam Brandon who presented all day. Another strong game from Daniel Smith saw him take runner-up honours again and Matt Jamieson had the boots on the right feet to kick 5 goals and take third in the player's player votes. Young Lloyd Scroope had a top game and picked up the Yass Pizza voucher for the week.

Round 1 v RMC @ Yass 31 Mar 2007

Well, not an auspicious beginning. A great first quarter saw the Roos just in front but it was pretty much down hill from there. There were patches of brilliance but the lack of fitness of some and the lack of match play and team work saw RMC get away to a tidy win.

Players Player was the perrenial Dave Willersdorf with Daniel Smith runner-up. New players Liam Brandon, Ben McCallum and Kim Boyle all showed glimpses of their potential. The Easter break may not be to our advantage as far as preparation goes but Round 2 will hopefully see some improvement.
