Presentation Night2008 Presentation Night was the culmination of the Roos blitz of the Division 4 ACTAFL competition. The awards for the players and club were presented at the Yass Soldiers Club over a delicious 3 course meal. The Fox Terrier was pleased to perform official duties as MC for the night. Dave Willersdorf was a very deserving Best and Fairest winner and it was fantastic to have Andrew Morgan as runner-up in what was a very close contest. Up to half a dozen players could have taken the honour in a very even count, demonstrating what an even performance the team put in throughout the season. The history page covers all the awards in detail. The Flag is Ours!!Yass Roos won the Grand Final in fine style to cap off the most successful year for the club so far. Congratulations to all involved; supporters, players, committee, coaching and game day assistants and sponsors. We have come a long way since an idea eight or nine years ago to maybe get an AFL side together for Yass. Well done to all who enjoyed the journey and those who will continue on to earn Yass more premierships into the future. Celebrations have been on-going since the big day but from all reports most should be back to normal tomorrow. The Fox's liver is being hung out to dry as we speak and I am sure there are quite a few sore heads still around. Just as well this doesn't happen every day as few would survive. Thanks to all those who wished the team well and helped us celebrate in style. This win was not only for the team but the town. OUR TEAM, OUR TOWN, OUR TIME! GO THE ROOS! The Terrier gets on his box again (one last Time)I hope I will be forgiven for abusing my power over this website just once more but I must congratulate Terry Lemon on a superb job as coach. Over the last three years he has steered the club on the course that has ended with this premiership win. He will tell you it was a year later than he wanted and will humbly say that the players did all the work but his plan has come to fruition. And it was a plan. I have watched Terry at his work and make no mistake, behind that rough diamond exterior is a shrewd footy brain, a loyal team man and he has done his homework. He knew his players well and what they could achieve and he studied his opposition to find the chinks. His training was considered and his sprays during games were just the right thing at the right time. I just hope the players really do appreciate the role he has played in their success. I also know that he has endured some very tough personal hardship, especially over the last few weeks and to still bring what he has to the team during the finals is an effort of huge proportions. My personal best wishes and thanks go to Terry and his family for the sacrifices they have made for this club over many years but particularly this year. Terry has said he will be retiring from the Roos after this and no-one could begrudge him leaving on the high of a Premiership win; the first for the Roos. Good luck Terry and thanks. What ever you choose in your footy future may you continue to enjoy it. You are a generous, lovable rogue and I am glad I was able to share this victory with you. Grand Final Here We Come! The Roos defeated Belconnen in the Preliminary Final to set up the Grand Final showdown with Gungahlin. With one win each this season and the Semi-Final last weekend only separated by 8 points this match promises to be an absolute belter btween two committed teams. Lets get behind the Roos as they strive to bring home the premiership for the first time. GO ROOS! Roos Undefeated in Home and Away 2008To round out the home and away matches the Roos added to the minor premiership by remaining undefeated for the entire home and away season of 2008. The alst ronud match went to the Roos with a comfortable win over Harman. The icing on the cake would be two more wins to secure the Premiership! Go Roos! Finals Bound Roos Secure Minor Premiership! (03-08-2008)With one round of the home and away games left the Yass Roos have secured the top of the ladder for the first time ever. Regardless of this weeks result against Harman the Roos have enough points to stay in top spot. It has been a mighty achievement built on teamwork and skills that have delivered an undefeated season so far. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff and all the support staff who have contributed to the success so far. The supporters and sponsors have been great too. We need to get everyone on board and focussed as we head into the finals campaign. This year from top of the ladder the Roos enter the finals with the double chance for the first time ever. They will, of course, not be planning to use this, instead aiming for victory over Gungahlin in the Semi-final to book the first Grand Final spot. The celebration of the minor premiership was a subdued affair as the team realise this is only the first step to the Premiership itself. Also injury worries are causing some concern as the Roos prepare for finals. The successful season has come at a cost physically, with several players needing to rest and manage injuries to be right for the finals. Although victorious against Eastlake yesterday, the team that played was missing some key players and some additional players were added to the injury list after the game. The team for next weeks match against Harman will make interesting reading. The Fox Terrier gives up!It seems you can't write anything without someone taking it the wrong way so I give up. The offending articles have been removed and I will say no more! The Roos Defend Trivia Title (12-07-2008)A Roos representative team attended this year's Magpies Trivia Night at the Bowlo in Yass to defend the title they narrowly won last year. Although some of last year's victorious team couldn't be there it was still a formidable line-up that took the field. Ben Serafin, Brendan Foran, John and Cally Foran, The Fox Terrier (elected reluctantly as team captain) and Mrs Fox Terrier (Corrine) made up the awesome combination that in the end came out winners for the second year in a row. It was a tense battle with scores locked in a two way tie at the half way point. The Roos clawed ahead in the second half and even a visitor un-friendly category of Magpies history could not hold back the team. It was interesting to note that in the Magpies category the best score was only 5 out of ten and the Roos managed two points (thanks to Sero's inside knowledge as an ex-magpie). Congratulations team in notching up another win for the Roos in 2008. By the way, some interesting trivia for you to remember:
Fashions off the Field in Cooma!A Roos fashion spectacular hit Cooma on the 21 June when a charitable and fun idea came up for the annual bus trip south. To get back on the bus for the trip home travellers had to dress up in an outfit purchased from Vinnies on a budget of $20 dollars. The photos here give you a taste of the sartorial elegance displayed. I am sure the Albion Hotel was stunned by the turnout at the after-game refreshments.
This is only a sample of the fashions. Many players went casual sporty with track pants and tops in many strange colour combinations. It was certainly well done. Congratulations to the team on their enthusiasm and I am sure Vinnies enjoyed the extra business during the week. Representative RoosAll three Roos players made the ACT team that went to the Wagga Wagga carnival on the long weekend. Brendan Foran, Ben Serafin and Ryan Cox all had a great weekend and really enjoyed playing at a different level to their weekly competition. I am sure the experience will stand them in good stead for their respective future's in footy and it was a feather in the cap to all three. It is also nice for the Yass Roos to be able to claim some recognition for their achievement. Congratulations to the boys! Roos make the Break UndefeatedWith a mid-season break due to the bye this weekend and no games on the June long weekend the Roos head into the second half of the season undefeated and on top of the ladder. Last Saturday's win over Harman makes it 8 from 8 but the good start and the two weeks off will not mean any slacking on the training schedule. Coach Terry Lemon has some more fitness work for the team to make sure they are in top condition for the run home to the finals so player's: Make sure you get to training as always! The Roos may not be playing on the next two weekends but training will be just as tough. The second half of the season will see the Roos up against three sides they have yet to face in Eastlake (in Yass), Cooma (at Cooma) and Gungahlin (at Yass). Also return matches against Murrumbidgee, ADFA, ANU, Eastlake and Harman mean there is still plenty to do for the Roos before any thought of finals footy in 2008. Go Roos. Rep Recognition for RoosThree Roos players have been invited to be part of the squad for the ACT Representative Team to play in a NSW state-wide competition in Wagga Wagga on the June long weekend. Brendan Foran, Ben Serafin and Ryan Cox all received the call-up and took part in a welcome dinner for the squad last Wednesday evening. The team will be announced after a couple of training runs but regardless of selections it is a great honour and recognition of the guy's talents to even be considered. Congratulations and good luck from the club to all three as they await the selection result. The Fox Terrier thinks it is about time the selectors looked beyond the ACT teams to find their Rep Players. We have some good talented players out here and a few of them have been brought through from junior beginnings by the Roos. It would seem this year quite a lot of people are taking notice of the Roos and not for the wrong reasons as could be said for some times in the past. It's interesting what a little success on the field can bring. My hat is off to Terry for sticking with it and finally seeing some of his plans come to fruition. It was never going to happen overnight, but this year... It's Six from Six as Coota Crumbles (10-05-2008)Another win for the Roos. Roos Rumble Belconnen for Top of the LadderSee the match report for details of the Roos fifth win. 50 Games for the Fox TerrierIn a much anticipated game (although not all because of the milestone) against Belconnen on Sunday the Fox Terrier (aka Wayde Chalmers) finally notched up 50 games for the Yass Roos. Considering he was a foundation player when the club formed for the 2002 season it has taken a while but when you retire at least three times, take a year off to coach a junior team, are over forty and don't really have a lot of talent to work with it does take a while to build up the stats. Once Foxy had reached forty games there was plenty of pressure to hang on and make the fifty milestone and now that the monkey is off his back you can be pretty sure that his next retirement will be his last (and you can stop talking about 75 or 100 games). The comemorative pewter mug will definitely have pride of place in the sporting memorabilia at Foxy's house along with the recently won Coach's Award spoon (rare as hen's teeth these; a discontinued award sure to rise in value in the memorabilia market). Goal Kicking UpdateAfter round 4 the Roos goal kicking records are as follows:
Poido's move to Full Forward while Luckie is out injured has boosted his total and Leigh is going well at the Centre Half Forward position. Player Lottery Success25 players were put up in the club's Player Lottery this year with all successfully sold. This gives each owner the chance to win $220 each week if their player is judged Player's Player. Leanne Byrne was the lucky winner for round 1 when her ticket was drawn as the owner of her son Daniel Smith. A full list of player owners will appear on the Sponsors page soon. Thank you to all those who put up their hard earned to support the team. First-up Win - First Time Ever! The Roos made another small piece of club history in round 1 by winning their first game of the season. Not only that but it was against the reigning premiers with only 19 players (18 for the second half). Great start guys. It's time to start believing in the team's ability and putting in the hard yards now to capitalise on the good start. Training is underway for 2008 and the Committee takes shape (Jan 2008)Terry Lemon has taken the reins again as coach for 2008 and has the boys out on the training track already. Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30pm at O'Connor Park during Daylight Saving is the place to be. Numbers have been good so far but more are always welcome. If you have been putting off getting fit for footy; Don't. The team are very keen about this season with many players putting in good off-season training to stay in shape. The committee has started to get itself together with Matt Jamieson stepping up to tak eon the Secretary role, Leigh French has donned the Vice-President mantle and also put together a team to look after the social scene. A new role of Football Operations has been created and this will develop over the year to assist the Secretary. Wayde Chalmers (aka the fox terrier) has this role and John Foran is looking after the books as Treasurer. AGM Fails to fill all Committee Vacancies (Oct 2007)Well we have a President and some general committee members and a major sponsor but there were no takers for Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Public Officer. At least we did get a quorum this time (just). Your club needs you. Anyone interested in filling these important roles in our club should get in touch with Steve Scroope (President) or any of the outgoing executive or just turn up at the next committee meeting on 13 Nov 7:30pm at the Aussie Hotel. If we can't even put a committee together what hope have we got. The News Archive: 2007 2006 2005 2004 |
